Create a template from an existing document
Turn a due diligence checklist you already have, as Word, PDF, PowerPoint or Excel, into a reusable questionnaire template, and control who can edit it.
Most firms already have the questions: a request list, an information memorandum outline, a checklist from a previous deal. Import that file and the AI turns its structure into a template's sections and questions, which you then refine once and reuse in every project.
Before you start
- The checklist is one file:
.docx,.doc,.pdf,.pptx,.xlsxor.xls. Several files have to be merged first. - You are a Member or Admin; guests cannot create templates.
Steps
- Open Templates in the main menu and select New Template. Enter a Name and, optionally, a Description.
- Drop the file into the dialog, or select Import from file. An AI Instructions field appears once a file is attached: tell the AI how to read it, for example Each numbered heading is a section; each bullet is one question; ignore the cover page and appendix. Select Create.
Leaving the file out creates a blank template with one example statement to edit.1.Name2.Import from file3.Create Template - Wait for the card to move from Processing to ready, typically a few minutes for a checklist of a few pages. Open it and read through: rename sections, split a question that asks two things, delete what does not apply. Changes save automatically.
Each Question block becomes a statement the AI answers separately in a project; the grey text under it is the instruction the AI follows. - Decide who may change it. New templates are editable by everyone in your organisation. Select Permissions on the template's card in the library; the Manage Access panel that opens restricts editing to named people or teams and leaves everyone else as viewers.
- Add labels to find it later, then use it: in any project, Analysis › New Questionnaire offers the template with Use.
Check the result
The template appears in Templates without a Processing badge, its sections and statements match the source document, and it is offered on a project's New Questionnaire page.
If something goes wrong
Open the template, fix the statements by hand, or delete it and import again with more specific AI Instructions. Excel files import best when each question is its own row.
Save the checklist as Word, PDF, PowerPoint or Excel first. Plain text and email files are not accepted for templates.
Its access was restricted under Permissions on its card. Add them or their team there.
Above about fifty statements the AI's template editing is refused. Split the checklist into two templates, for example commercial and legal.
